Pharaoh Ants Spread Disease in New Jersey Nursing Homes, Hospitals

Unlike wood-destroying carpenter ants, most ants that bother northern New Jersey home and business owners do not cause damage and are considered nuisance pests. However, their incredible numbers can overwhelm a home or office and create havoc for residents and workers. While many ants bite, minute Pharaoh Ants are the only species common in New Jersey that are known to spread pathogens and bacteria.

A considerable health threat in New Jersey hospitals and nursing homes, Pharaoh Ants spread Salmonella, Pseudomonas, Clostridium, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus pyogenes, all of which can cause harmful diseases, some life-threatening, particularly to the ill and elderly. Just 1/16 inch long and a difficult to see translucent reddish gold color, Pharaoh Ants are a serious problem in nursing homes and hospitals. These ants crawl into wounds to feed on blood plasma and wound dressings, spreading disease and bacteria as they crawl from patient to patient.

Pharaoh Ants can be particularly difficult to control in medical care settings where potent pesticides can pose additional risks to already frail patients. Heritage Pest Control offers environmentally responsible “green” pest control options that use safe, natural botanicals to control ants and other  pests. These green pest control products pose no risk to sick or recovering hospital patients or to nursing home residents who may suffer chronic illness or struggling immune systems.
