Safety Issues with Flea Products Could Cause Problems for Northern New Jersey Homeowners
Most northern New Jersey pet owners breathed a sigh of relief and stopped worrying about fleas when monthly liquid flea products came on the market a number of years ago. These spot-on pesticide products for flea and tick control were considered safer to use for both pets and their owners. No more dusty, pesticide impregnated collars to put on or worry about the kids touching. And the liquid products seemed to be more effective in protecting Rover and Muffin from fleas and ticks when they went outside for a stroll around the yard.
Unfortunately spot-on pesticides may not be as safe for our pets as we thought. A rash of pet illnesses and deaths attributed to these products has led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to order a full review of spot-on flea and tick control products. The agency is working with other agencies in the U.S. and Canada to develop testing and labeling standards to improve the safety and safe use of spot-on flea and tick products.
Many concerned northern New Jersey pet owners are looking for alternative products until safety issues are resolved. Use of potentially less effective flea and tick products increases the risk that your dog or cat may bring harmful insect pests into your home. Heritage Pest Control’s Home Protection Plan can ensure a safe and healthy home environment for your family and your pets. Regular inspections by our pest control professionals can spot and stop flea and tick infestation before they become a problem.
