It seems that by genetic analysis the bed bug doesn’t fall far from the genealogical tree. It may take only one or two females to start a large infestation if the bugs go unchecked.

The bug’s genetic density was studied and found to be very low which means that maybe just a few females supply the eggs in an infestation.  When the eggs hatch the offspring mate with each other and with the original egg suppliers. This is unusual in many species, although another hearty and well entrenched New Jersey pest, the cockroach, is also believed to indulge in this behavior.  The study speculates that insects that rely on humans for transportation seem more likely to thrive through this behavior.

The bed bug does not fly or jump but it still manages to be an incredible traveler. That is why you need to be careful about what you bring into your home. If you buy second hand furniture it should be meticulously checked. Clothing from your students returning home from college should be inspected as well, especially if they have been complaining of bug bites while away.

The desire to kill roaches in the area had these pesticides in demand. The case also revealed that there is an underground market for these types of powerful chemicals. There are also powerful agents for rat control available but it can be extremely hazardous to people and pets.

The banning of DDT back in 1972 has been and remains controversial. There were a number of stories through the 2000’s about the ban and how it created a problem for countries hard hit by malaria. This ban on its manufacture has also made it harder and harder for any country that still allows its importation to find DDT.

Even after the ban DDT contamination cropped up mostly due to its long life in soils and the washing of contaminated soil into our lakes and streams. DDT is said to damage the liver, be a carcinogen and cause reproductive system damage and temporary nervous system damage.
