The brown marmorated stink bug is a formidable pest for the average homeowner to conquer. Do-it-yourselfers have discovered that store-bought pesticides do not work on this shield-shaped prehistoric-looking pest. Spray these buggers with chemicals and they will simply lift their back end up and blast off an eye-burning spritz that will make you gag. They come by their name by no accident as they are truly a stink bug.

Here are aw strange non-pesticide ways that people have tried to rid their homes of these stinky pests. Beware, these treatments can be costly or quite messy!

  • Put hot sauce in a squirt bottle. Spray the stink bugs. Warning, the coloring of the hot sauce stains anything that it touches, indoors and outdoors!
  • Wash curtains and bed linens. Some people believe that the clean smell will keep stink bugs away. Not true! Additionally, the smell fades in a short period of time.
  • Flush stink bugs that you catch. Better to flush than crush, but you will end up with a high water bill!
  • Catch them and seal them in a Ziploc bag. Reports are that it can take 2 months for the bugs to die off in the zippered bag. Can you imagine the smell in there? Yikes!
  • Spray them with hairspray to paralyze them, and then put them in a jar of rubbing alcohol. Also, you can anticipate that when you spray the stink bug with hairspray, they will return the favor by spraying you!  Inside or out, what a terrible sticky mess you would need to clean up.
