What Kind Of Spiders Live In New Jersey?

Many types of spiders call our area home. What you might find interesting is that most species have no desire to invade your home. There are only a select few spiders in New Jersey that regularly find their way indoors:

  • The house spider is a yellowish-brown 3/16 to 5/16” long arachnid with several dark stripes that meet at an angle. This common web spider is venomous but does not pose a serious risk to human health.
  • The cellar spider is a pale yellow to light brown, ¼ to ⅜” long arachnid with a small body and long thin legs. This ground spider is not harmful to humans and loves dark moist areas.
  • The jumping spider is a black, brown, tan, or grey, ⅛ to ¾” long arachnid with large forward-facing eyes and a big jump. This ground spider has venom but is not a medical threat to humans.
  • The wolf spider is a dark brown, ¼ to 1 ⅜” long arachnid with pale stripes and markings across its body. This ground spider has venom and causes minor to moderate pain with its bites.
  • The brown recluse spider is a light to dark brown, ¼ to ½” long arachnid with a dark backward violin-shaped mark located behind its head. This ground spider has medically threatening venom and should be avoided.
  • The black widow spider is a black, 1 ½ to 1 ⅜” long arachnid with a red hourglass mark on the underside of its bulbous abdomen. This web spider has a potent venomous bite that can cause severe pain and other serious symptoms in humans.

What To Do If You Spot Spiders Inside Your Home

Spiders are obviously unwelcome house guests here in New Jersey. If you see one of these pests indoors, start by trying to identify it. If it appears to be a brown recluse or black widow, proceed with caution. For web spiders, we recommend sweeping them and their webs up with a broom and storing the broom outdoors. For ground spiders, a good smack from an item or stomp from a shoe will do the trick. As for a more permanent solution, consider investing in a year-round pest control plan.
