Cockroach Control in Northern New Jersey

Family-Owned Pest Elimination Serving Morris, Essex, Bergen & Passaic Counties

Cockroaches don’t announce themselves. By the time you spot one, there can be a larger population already established in your walls, cabinets, or crawl spaces. At Heritage Pest Control, we’ve helped homeowners across Northern New Jersey address cockroach infestations since 1989, working from our Pompton Plains office to serve Morris, Essex, Bergen, and Passaic counties. Our Integrated Pest Management approach means we find the root cause first, then treat it rather than applying a generic chemical spray and leaving.

Entry points matter as much as the treatment itself. After identifying how cockroaches are getting in, our technicians seal those gaps to help reduce new activity. That combination of targeted treatment and physical exclusion supports a more thorough approach.

Signs You May Have a Cockroach Problem

Cockroaches are nocturnal and good at staying hidden, so visible signs often appear before the insects themselves do. Pepper-like droppings along baseboards, behind appliances, or inside cabinets are among the earliest indicators. Egg cases, which look like small dark capsules, tucked into corners or along wall edges, are another. A persistent musty odor with no obvious source can point to a hidden colony sheltering in a damp area of the home. Sightings during daylight hours are a reliable signal that the population has grown large enough to compete for food and space.

Correct species identification shapes the entire treatment plan. Our technicians use diagnostic tools and experience to distinguish between similar-looking species before selecting an approach. That attention to detail has made a real difference: we’ve located hidden nesting sites that two prior pest control companies failed to find. We don’t start treatment until we know exactly what we’re dealing with.

What Makes Us Different

Why Homeowners Across Morris, Bergen, Essex & Passaic Counties Trust Us

Our credentials reflect a consistent standard of service, not just a marketing checklist. We hold an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and maintain active memberships in both the New Jersey Pest Management Association and the National Pest Management Association. Those affiliations keep us accountable to current industry standards and give you a straightforward way to verify our standing. HomeAdvisor and Angie’s List have independently recognized our work as well.

Every technician on our team is individually licensed and required to complete mandatory continuing education hours to keep those credentials current. We also offer bilingual service so treatment plans and safety information are communicated clearly, regardless of the language you’re most comfortable with.

Our Approach to Cockroach Treatment

We don’t apply a one-size-fits-all spray. Our methods are targeted and minimally invasive, pairing EPA-approved products with exclusion work that closes the pathways cockroaches use to enter and shelter. Product selection is guided by the presence of children, pets, or other household members, which shapes what we choose and how we apply it. For customers who want to reduce chemical use further, we offer a fully green treatment option using plant-based products and natural oils.

Throughout the process, our technicians explain what they found, why a particular treatment was selected, and what you can expect afterward. You’ll know what’s happening in your home at every step.

Common Cockroach Species Found in New Jersey Homes

Not all cockroaches behave the same way, and the species present in your home determines where to look, what to use, and how to help reduce the chances of them returning. Research on New Jersey buildings has found German cockroaches account for the vast majority of indoor occurrences, with American and Oriental cockroaches making up a much smaller share.

  • German cockroach: Golden-brown to dark brown, roughly half an inch to five-eighths of an inch long, with two dark parallel stripes behind the head. They have wings but don’t fly. This is the species most likely to turn up in kitchens and bathrooms, where moisture and food are accessible.
  • American cockroach: The largest common home-invading species, reddish-brown in color. They typically enter through drains, sewers, or basement openings and are more common in lower levels of a home.
  • Oriental cockroach: Dark and shiny, sometimes called a water bug. They prefer damp, cool areas like basements and move more slowly than other species.
  • Brown-banded cockroach: Similar in size to the German cockroach but found in warmer, drier locations away from moisture, including inside furniture and upper wall areas.

Why a Cockroach Infestation Is a Health Concern

Cockroaches aren’t just unpleasant to find. Their droppings, saliva, and shed skin are documented allergen and asthma triggers, with children particularly vulnerable. They contaminate food and surfaces they contact and are associated with spreading bacteria including salmonella. Because they reproduce quickly and stay concealed between feedings, a handful of sightings often means a much larger population is already established out of view. Addressing the problem promptly can help limit both the health exposure and the scope of treatment needed.
